Office of Strategic Services

The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was a United States intelligence agency established in 1942 during World War II to coordinate espionage, sabotage, and intelligence gathering behind enemy lines. Led by William J. “Wild Bill” Donovan, the OSS played a crucial role in supporting resistance movements, conducting covert operations, and analyzing strategic information across Europe and Asia. It marked the first major effort by the U.S. to centralize intelligence activities, laying the groundwork for modern intelligence practices. Although the OSS was dissolved in 1945 after the war ended, its legacy continued with the creation of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 1947, which adopted many of its functions and methodologies.
